Modifying Hosts (URL Forwarding):

Forwarding or redirecting your domain name to an existing web site
  1. Login to our Control Panel.

Please refer to "I'm having problems logging in to the Control Panel" should you ever encounter any problems connecting to our server.
  2. Enter your domain name and password. Remember, your domain name does not include "www.". If you do not remember your password, please contact us.
  3. Scroll down the section entitled "Hosts".

    • In row 1 under the section entitled "Hostname" type in the "@" symbol (without the quotes). This signifies your root domain or where someone would go if they typed in "http://your-domain.com" without the "www.".
    • In that same row under the section entitled "Address", enter the full URL or web address that you would like to forward your root domain to. This can be any URL on the Internet. It can even be an IP Address.
    • In that same row under the section entitled "Record Type", select either "URL Redirect" or "URL Frame". See the section below entitled "Differences between a "URL Redirect" and "URL Frame" for more information.
    • In row 2 under the section entitled "Hostname" type in "www" (without the quotes).
    • In that same row under the section entitled "Address", enter the full URL or web address that you would like to forward those people who go to http://www.yourdomain.com. This also can be any URL on an IP Address.
    • In that same row under the section entitled "Record Type", select either "URL Redirect" or "URL Frame". Again, see the section below entitled "Differences between a "URL Redirect" and "URL Frame" for more information.

As you can see our free URL Forwarding is very powerful and flexible. In other words it's now possible to send people who go to "http://yourdomain.com" to one place and those who go to http://www.yourdomain.com to another. Using what you've learned you could even forward those people going to http://private.yourdomain.com to a completely different place simply by typing in the word "private" in another row and follow the same pattern as above.
  4. Click on the "Modify" button at the bottom of the page to save your changes.

Differences between a "URL Redirect" and "URL Frame"
Both of these "Record Types" allow you to forward or redirect your domain name to an existing web URL or web address. The biggest difference is when you get to the URL or web address you're forwarding to. For example, selecting "URL Redirect" will whisk anyone who goes to your new domain, off to the URL you entered in the "Address" field. When they get there however, the URL or web address in the location bar in their browser will change to the web address you provided in the "Address" field. Selecting a "URL Frame" as a "Record Type" will still forward or redirect those going to your new domain, but when they get to their destination, the URL on the location bar of their browser will show the domain name you just registered.

Using a "Record Type" of "URL Frame" is useful when you want to hide the location of the web address you are forwarding to.

*Please note that any changes to your "Host" information may not work or be noticeable if you just registered your domain name. The reason for this is that all other DNS servers throughout the world need time to update or propagate. This process usually takes about 24 to 48 hours after you have registered your domain. Even if it's been a couple days since your domain has been registered, it may still take a few hours before your domain name forwards properly, as our own internal DNS servers update every 3 hours.

Common Problems Using URL Forwarding

Q) The word "mail" has appeared in one of the rows. What does this mean?
A) Once you decide to use Email Forwarding, our server automatically adds a new row with the word "mail" under the "Hostname" section when you leave the control panel. This is normal as this row allows us to properly forward your email using your domain name. Leave this "mail" row alone and do not change any of the settings. If for some reason you changed something on this row, simply remove the word "mail" from the "Hostname" section and any address under the "Address" section for that row. Click the "Modify" button at the bottom of the page and log back in. If you are using email forwarding, our control panel will detect it and add a "mail" row with the correct settings. Should you have a
ny questions, please contact technical support.
